found: in japan
a print exchange collaboration
what is "found:"?
found is a collaborative project. each artist will make an edition of 12 hand pulled prints from woodcut, linoleum cut, or other printmaking technique. your art should reflect the theme of the book which is "found: in japan".
who can participate?
anyone can participate! from chiseled veterans to first timers. your experience in this medium does not matter. what does matter is that you appreciate hand pulled prints, you have the willingness to create & a love for all things hand made.
how does it work?
each artist will make an edition of 12 prints and send them to me in the mail. after collecting all the prints, i will bind 12 books by hand- with one of each print inside and send each of the participating artists their own copy of the book.
why are you doing this?
i have a love for all things handmade. in this mass-produced world, it is hard to find original books made by hand. i think that a project like this is a beautiful way to bring artists together to share their work with each other and have something beautiful to take away from it.
what are the project specs?
- create a unique piece of art that reflects the theme of the book "found: in japan". this is open to your own personal interpretation of the theme. i suggest making a word association list and jotting down all the words and images that come to mind when you think of "japan".
- then using woodcut, linoleum cut or another printmaking process, create an edition of 12 prints.
- the prints should be made on 10 pt. 80 lb. card stock/cover stock or similar. most paper labeled card stock or cover stock is close to that and will be fine.
- the size of the paper should be 9 1/2" wide x 8 1/2" high (which can be cut down from a standard 8 1/2" x 11" sheet). leave a 1" margin on the left side (for book binding purposes) and measure in from that point. an all around margin of 1 1/4" is prefered which leaves a 6" x 6" work space. your art does not have to be 6" x 6" square. it just needs to fit somewhere in that general area. please draw any measurements lines lightly in pencil so that they are easy to erase. use a kneaded eraser as to not damage the paper fibers.

- write one short paragraph describing your work, thought process, technique, etc. along with your name, city, state/province/country and email it to me at the time you send me the prints.
- allow time for your prints to dry and ship your prints to me in a sturdy envelope. you may place tissue paper in between prints or other means to protect your art in shipping.
- after receiving all prints, i will then collate the art, create the artist info page and sew the books together. one (1) book will be mailed to each participating artist.
- the deadline for sending prints is approximately 30 days after all project participants have signed up. i will make an announcement of the exact date after the project is full. projected completed date is early summer 2005.
who pays for this?
you pay for your own paper & the shipping cost to ship the prints to me. i will pay for any bookbinding supplies and the shipping costs to ship the book to you. if you'd like to include a self addressed paid envelope to help me out with the return shipping cost that would be nice also.
sounds great! how do i sign up?
this project is limited to 12 artists (including myself). the first 11 people to sign up will be a part of this project. you can sign up by emailing me: sunberst (at) hotmail (dot) com with "found: in japan project" in the subject of the email. i look forward to working with you!
